Garland – Mr. Robert (Bobby) Lee Sumner, age 80, of Helltown Road in Garland passed away on Tuesday, September 18th, 2018 while at the home of his daughter Beth, in Coats NC.
Bobby was born May 28th, 1938 in Sampson County to the late Jesse Sumner and Jessie K. Sumner of Clinton. He was preceded in death by his brothers Clete Sumner and Jerry Sumner, and sisters Peggy Lane and Hilda Burke
Bobby retired as owner of the Garland Piggly Wiggly and co-owner of the Roseboro location, and served with the U.S. Army, Army Reserves and NC ARNG as an Infantryman/ Radio Telephone Operator and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant (E5). He was a member of the Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church (PFWC) in Garland, serving as a long time deacon, and a devout Christian always freely gave of his time to those in need all over the Garland area, and an avid deer hunter.
Survivors, include his wife of 58 years, Beverly Ann Sumner; daughter and son-in-law Beth and Joseph M. Collier Jr. of Coats, NC; daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Terry W. Long of Clinton, NC; brother Kenneth Sumner of Raleigh, NC and sister Linda Clifton of Clinton, NC; 3 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will hold visitation beginning at 1 p.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 22nd, 2018, at the Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church (PFWC) in Garland, NC. Officiating will be Rev. Jeff Hayes and Rev. Dewey Ball.
The family will receive friends on Thursday September 20th and Friday September 21st, 2018 at the home of Lisa and Terry Long located at 199 Pinehurst Lane, Clinton, NC.
Burial will be in the Garland Cemetery.
