Beverly Ann Simmons Sumner passed away on November 28, 2023, at her home in Garland.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 pm at Garland Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church, with Reverend Jeff Testerman and Reverend Dewey Ball. Visitation will take place at the church at 12:30, prior to the service.
Beverly was born on January 18, 1942, to George and Ada Hobbs Simmons. She married her husband, Bobby, in 1960, and began her career in the grocery business alongside her husband.
Beverly’s adult career was spent in various capacities in the Piggly Wiggly Corporation and when her extended career with Piggly Wiggly ended, Beverly began a lengthy tenure with Sampson County Social Services, before retiring, due to health issues. She was a decades-long member of The Garland Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church, where she, in prior years, taught Sunday School, led the adult choir, and was currently active with the church’s prayer line…ensuring church members were made aware of needs, sickness, etc. within the church family and Garland community.
Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Sumner, three sisters…Doris Simmons Sinclair, Edith Simmons Eggleston, and Jean Simmons Mills.
She is survived by one brother, Clifton Simmons of Clinton, two daughters…Lisa Long (Terry) of Clinton, Beth Collier (Joe) of Dunn, 3 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren…Justin and Tonya Toler, along with their son, Jaxson. Courtney and Brandon English, with Riley Maddox, Wren, and Ripp, Caroline and Jesse Ishee with Grayson and Bobby. Beverly is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews from both the Sumner family and the Simmons family.

Thank you to all who have offered their condolences, and sent texts and phone calls. A special thank you to Billy and Beverly Johnson, who have been there every time they were called. You have been the best neighbors and friends. Mom was blessed to have you.
A private interment for family members will take place immediately following the service.
