Charles Nashley Tatum

March 3, 1948 — October 31, 2025

Elizabethtown

Charles Nashley Tatum, a dedicated mechanic and cherished member of his community, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. He was born on March 3, 1948, in Robeson County, NC, to Lennie Brooks Tatum and Acie Lee Robinson Tatum, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Eugene Claxton Tatum and Willie Brooks Tatum.

Throughout his life, Charles exemplified a strong work ethic and deep commitment to his craft as a heavy equipment mechanic. He began his career with S & M Equipment in Elizabethtown until it was sold to Pioneer Machinery, where he continued his career and eventually retired after more than 30 years of dedicated service. His skill, professionalism, and integrity earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike.

Charles proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, where he was a paratrooper—an experience he carried with great pride throughout his life.

Married for 56 wonderful years, Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Shelby Jean Tatum, who stood faithfully by his side through all of life’s journeys. He is also survived by his children: three daughters, Pamela Tatum, Paula Tatum, and Crystal Tatum, all of Elizabethtown, NC; and one son, Charles Patrick Tatum, also of Elizabethtown. Charles was a proud grandfather to Chad Tatum, Kayla Tatum, Adam Tyson Tatum, and Daniel Tyson Tatum, and a loving great-grandfather to Sophia Bowen. He is also survived by two sisters, Rita T. DeGrella and husband John of Lexington, TN, and Joyce Thomas and husband Johnnie of Elizabethtown, NC, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Charles will be remembered for his sense of humor, humility, compassion, and calm presence. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the love he shared with his family and community. In his final act of generosity, Charles was an organ donor—his gift saved a life and continues to reflect the love and compassion he showed throughout his own.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at A Touch of Country Venue, 9700 N.C. Hwy. 41, Harrells, NC, with full military honors. All who knew and loved Charles are welcome to attend and share in celebrating his remarkable life.

Immediately following the service, friends and family are asked to stay for a time of fellowship and sharing a meal together.
