Donna "Kay"
Smith
Apr 14, 1951 — May 20, 2026
Donna Kay Smith, known affectionately as Kay to her family and friends, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on April 14, 1951, in Wilmington, Kay lived a life marked by warmth, generosity, and an infectious spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Kay dedicated much of her career to Vintage Values, from which she retired in 2011. Her work was just one part of a fulfilling life characterized by a deep love for simple pleasures and meaningful connections. She had a passion for yard work, fishing, and yard sales, which brought her joy and a sense of community. Traveling with J.B., the love of her life and her cherished companion for 30 years, was another source of happiness, especially their visits to Amish country, which she loved dearly. Kay also found comfort in coloring, a quiet activity that reflected her gentle and creative nature.
Her commitment to service extended beyond her personal interests; she volunteered at the Good Shepard, an accomplishment she held dear. Through her volunteer work, Kay touched many lives and exemplified the spirit of kindness and selflessness.
Kay will be profoundly missed by those who knew her. She never met a stranger, always greeting others with an open heart and a warm smile. Her presence was a source of comfort and joy, and her loss leaves a significant void in the lives of many.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Melissa Mintz; four grandchildren: David Charest II, Michael Charest and his wife Morgan, Kaeline Charest Hand and her husband Matt, and Danielle James; and four great-grandchildren: Alyssa Charest, Lincoln Hand, Kylie Hand, and Elias Charest. Kay also leaves behind her brother, Kenneth Smith, and sister, Barbara Smith, who share in the sorrow of her passing. Alongside family, J.B. Carteret, Jr., her devoted buddy of 30 years and the love of her life, mourns the loss of a true partner and beloved soulmate.
Kay’s parents, Mildred Bland Smith and Ed Lee Smith, along with her siblings, Mildred Elledge, Joseph Smith, and Ronald Smith, preceded her in death. Their memory lives on through Kay’s enduring spirit.
The community will remember Donna Kay Smith as a woman who embodied warmth, generosity, and an unwavering openness to others. She enriched the lives of her family, friends, and all who crossed her path, and for that, she will be cherished forever.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the Garland Cemetery, 1030 Harrells Hwy, Garland, NC.
