Edna Bell New, born on April 25, 1936, in Bladen County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, also in Bladen County. A devoted child nutritionist throughout her career in the food service industry, Edna was known for her passion and commitment to promoting healthy eating habits among children. Her life's work touched many lives, shaping the future generation through her dedication and expertise.
Edna is survived by a loving family that includes her children: Wanda Barnhill of Ivanhoe; Margaret Porter and her husband Glenn of Kelly, NC; Janet Lanier and her husband Wayne of Maple Hill, NC; Jimmy New of Atkinson, NC; Eddie New and his wife Mindy of Clarksville, VA; James New and his wife Amy of Willow Springs, NC; and Michael New and his wife Cindy of Emerald Isle Beach, NC. She cherished her role as a grandmother, boasting 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom were a source of immense pride and joy for her. Edna will be remembered not only for her professional contributions but also for her deep connections with her family and friends. She is also survived by her siblings: Robert Smith of Garland, NC; Larry Smith of Roseboro, NC; Hazel Chadwick and her husband J.C. of Elizabethtown, NC; Peggy Poole of Clinton, NC; and Mary Grainger of Tallahassee, FL.
She was predeceased by her parents, Eddie and Helen Smith, and by several siblings: Elmer Smith, Hal Smith, Wilbert Smith, E.J. Smith, James Smith, Earl Smith, and son-in-law, Norman Barnhill.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-1:45 PM prior to the service. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Edna's life during the funeral service on December 12, 2025, starting at 2:00 PM at White Lake Baptist Church, located at 7636 North Carolina 41, Elizabethtown, NC. Following the service, Edna will be laid to rest at Smith Cemetery in Harrells, NC, at a special interment ceremony. Services will be officiated by: Carey Horrell.
Edna Bell New leaves behind a legacy of love, caring, and dedication that will be cherished by all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but remembered fondly in the hearts of those she impacted throughout her lifetime.
