Ida Lee Johnson, born Ida Lee Fryar on July 10, 1921 in the close-knit community of Sampson County, NC, passed away peacefully at Mary Gran Nursing Center in Clinton, NC, just two days shy of her 105th birthday. Her remarkable life, spanning over a century, was marked by resilience, devotion, and quiet strength—a tapestry woven with cherished memories that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.

From her earliest years in Sampson County, Ida was guided by the gentle hand of her mother, Ezzie Stackhouse Fryar. The bonds of family, shaped by laughter and challenge, remained central throughout her life. As time unfolded, these bonds grew and reshaped with each new joy and heartache. Ida became a beloved mother to her sons— Harold, Furman, James, Truman and Haywood,—and a steady presence through life’s seasons. She endured the heartbreaking losses of her husband Joseph, and her sons Harold (Rachel), Furman (Kelly) and Truman. She also endured the loss of her daughter-in-law Glenda Gail Johnson as well as her dear brother Major Brown, her heart remained open, carrying their memories onward with grace.

Ida’s unwavering spirit lives on through those who survive her. Her son James Johnson (Lillian Johnson) and Haywood Johnson (Roberta) stand as living testaments to her influence and care, as does her devoted daughter-in-law, Darlene Johnson. She held a special place in her heart for Joyce McKnight Johnson and Geraldine Turner. She also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A woman of deep faith and enduring resolve, Ida drew comfort and purpose from her community. She became a Christian at a young age and was a devoted member of Mt. Zion Ame. Church for many years. Her journey, marked by steadfastness and humility, was an inspiration within her family and beyond, radiating warmth into the lives surrounding her. Those who had the blessing to know Ida recall her gentle smile, her fortitude in the face of life’s challenges, and her quiet wisdom—a wisdom earned from years lived with an open and compassionate heart.

As we prepare to celebrate her extraordinary life, we invite family, friends, and all who were touched by her presence to honor her memory. A viewing will be held at Carter Funeral Home, 111 N Ingold Ave, Garland, NC, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Mt. Zion AME Zion Church, 11015 Taylors Bridge Highway, Magnolia, NC, beginning at 1:00 pm and concluding at 2:00 pm. Following the service, Ida will be laid to rest at the church cemetery, surrounded by the loving embrace of her community.

Though her life’s physical journey has ended, Ida Lee Johnson’s remarkable spirit and legacy will endure in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege to walk part of life’s road alongside her. With gratitude, we look back on time spent in her company—a life lived with quiet dignity, gentle encouragement, and steadfast love.
