Joe "Pa Joe" Thomas Cashwell, of Sampson County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, at Rex Hospital in Wake County, NC. According to his Birth Certificate he was born on September 30, 1939, in Sampson County, but he was born a week before, on the 22nd. Joe was the beloved son of the late Johnny James Cashwell and Sylvia Fields Cashwell.
Joe’s life was rich in family, shaped by love and dedication. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Sara L. Cashwell, whose companionship brought him comfort and joy throughout his days. Together, they built a family grounded in care and unwavering mutual support. Joe was the proud father of Andrea Hobbs (Frank), Gay Joella Beam, and Kyle Cashwell (Hannah Parrott), each of whom carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength.
Joe’s pride extended to his grandchildren, Johnathan Sutton, Jenny Hobbs, Lance Beam, Miley Beam, Larson Cashwell, Gabe Cashwell, Lathen Cashwell, Clay Hobbs (Kaitlynn), Logan Hobbs, and Jeremy Sutton. He cherished each grandchild, celebrating their individuality and achievements as milestones in his own journey. His loving bonds extended as well to his sister, Lyndia Autry, who survives him.
He was predeceased by his father and mother, Johnny James and Sylvia Fields Cashwell, his brothers Teddy, Jimmy, Edward, and Jerry Cashwell, and his sister Ann Cashwell. Joe’s memory also lives on in the thoughts of those dear to him and in the generations that follow.
Joe retired from Southern Heritage Sawmill where he had worked as a Saw filer. He volunteered with the Garland Fire Department Rescue squad for 26 years. He served as a Deacon at Garland Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church. Throughout his life, Joe remained deeply connected to his hometown roots in Sampson County, instilling in his family the values of compassion, resilience, and community.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Garland Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church in the fellowship hall, located at 475 W 2nd St, Garland, NC. The funeral service will follow at the church, in the Chapel at 4:00 PM. Interment will take place afterward at Garland Cemetery, 1030 Harrells Hwy, Garland, NC.
Joe Thomas Cashwell leaves behind a legacy defined by enduring relationships and a deep commitment to family. He will be remembered with affection and respect by all who had the privilege to know him.
