Garland

Merian Lee Smith, a beloved seamstress and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully at her home on August 28, 2025. Born in Sampson County on December 12, 1951, Merian was known for her honesty, dedication, and culinary skills. She approached life with a spirit of devotion, particularly evident in her commitment to her faith and her church, where she was an unwavering presence each day at noon for prayer.

Merian’s talents extended beyond her seamstress work; she was a passionate cook who derived immense joy from preparing meals for her family and community. Food held a special place in her heart, as did fishing and gardening, which brought her tranquility and happiness. She often spent her days tending to her garden and enjoying the tranquility of nature while fishing.

Merian is survived by her loving husband, Ottis Smith Jr., and her cherished children: Pamela Murphy-Smith (Bobby) of Garland, NC, Randolph Hollingsworth Jr. (Angela) of Centerville, OH, Renata Clyburn (Kelvin) of Charlotte, NC, and Eric (Kerry) Deric (Becky) of Garland, NC. Her siblings Charlie J. And a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Claretta Williamson, her father, Arthur Boykin Sr., and her son, Michael Murphy. Each of them played a significant role in her life, and their memories remained etched in her heart.

Merian Lee Smith’s legacy of love, honesty, and devotion will continue to inspire those she leaves behind, reminding them to cherish the simple joys in life, just as she did. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her family and in the memories of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Interment: Boykin Family Cemetery Location on Hwy 411 about 1.5 miles from Boykin Bridge Rd.

May the Life I Have Lived Speak for Me

In the quiet moments of the day, When words are few and far away, May the life that I have lived, in every deed, Speak for me, in times of need.

In kindness shown and love expressed, In helping hands and hearts at rest, May my actions speak loud and clear, Tell my story, year by year.

In every smile and tear I have shared, In every moment, here and there, May the life that I have lived, with grace and care, Speak for me, in ways so rare.

For words may fade and time may pass, But the legacy I leave will last, May the life that I have lived, in truth and light, Speak for me, both day and night.
