Mittie Belle Bailey

Mittie Belle Gibbs Bailey, 89, of Garland, NC, passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in Clarksville, Tennessee. Mittie was born on January 22, 1936, in Garland, NC, to the late Isaiah and Lillian Gibbs. She has eight siblings, Mildred, Mary Alice, and Odell. She has five siblings that are deceased, Doris, Isaiah, Charlie, Marion, and Sam. She attended school at Garland Colored School. She met and married Nathaniel Bailey August 15, 1954. They were married for 65 years. Together they had seven children, Mildred (Joseph), Nathaline (Reginald), Bobby (deceased), Barbara Ann, Sandra Kay (deceased), Joette, and Kenneth (her baby). They raised Rico and Kojak as their own children. She had a couple in Clarksville that loved her as their adopted mother, Mr. Danny and Audrey Field. She has twelve grandchildren, and a host of great, and great-great grandchildren.

Mittie worked at the Garland Shirt factory for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Garland. After the death of her husband, she moved to Clarksville, TN, where she lived with her daughter Joette. She attended church also in Clarksville, Temple of Truth Church, and Great Commission Christian Church. She loved Church, gospel songs, cooking, gardening, and baking.

We were told she loved playing basketball. She said, “she loved playing basketball more than eating".

The viewing will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 1-6 pm, with family present from 5-6 pm at Carter Funeral Home. The funeral is planned for Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 12:00 PM, at Garland First Baptist Church. Interment to follow at the Gibbs Cemetery, 860 Gibbs Road, Garland, NC.
