Mittie Coore Smith

September 19, 1937 — March 7, 2026

Garland

Mittie Jane Coore Smith, 88, born on September 19, 1937, in Bladen County, left this world on March 7, 2026, leaving behind a legacy as vibrant and bold as she was. To know Mittie was to know a true firecracker- a woman who possessed a sharp wit, a contagious energy, and a "straight-shooter" philosophy. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, known for her spirit and unwavering love for her family.

Her career was a testament to her versatile spirit. Whether she was working the fields or providing expert service at Brooks Brothers, she was known for her refreshing candor. Early in her life, she played an essential role alongside her husband, Carl Wilson Smith, and their sons in farming blueberries, crops, logging, and trucking. This connection to the land and her dedication to family provided a foundation of hard work and determination that she instilled in her children and grandchildren. You might have walked in looking for a suit or a pint of berries, but you walked out with her genuine opinion- and usually she was right. Beneath her spark was a heart of gold. She was the family’s fiercest protector and most loyal friend, always the first to offer a hand (or a piece of her mind) when it was needed most.

Mittie was an active member of Cypress Creek Baptist Church and a devoted Christian. She graduated from White Oak School with the Class of 1955. Mittie had a deep appreciation for education and believed strongly in sharing her knowledge and experience with others. Known for her straightforward nature and kind heart, she was always willing to offer a helping hand or a word of encouragement. Family was the center of Mittie’s life, and she cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. Whether gathering to enjoy seafood or hunting for a good bargain, she found great happiness in the simple moments shared together.

Her family, including sons Carl Dale (Annette) and Roger (Cheryl), son-in-law, Donald Rutland, as well as her cherished grandchildren Tiffany Friedt (Michael), Andrew Smith (Whitney), and Caison Davis (Hunter), carry forward her legacy of love and support. Mittie also delighted in her role as a great-grandmother, finding joy in the smiles of Shaddix Friedt, Anslee Smith, and Charlee Davis. Each shared moment with them brought happiness that touched her heart deeply.

Mittie's life was defined by beautiful memories of laughter, family gatherings, and shared experiences. She reflected on her life with humility, stating, "I had a good life. Not rich in money or goods, but had a life of love and affection." This simple yet profound statement encapsulates her spirit, which will continue to inspire those who were lucky enough to know her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Wilson Smith and her daughter, Wanda Sue Smith Rutland. Also, her brothers, Euguene Billups and Frank Coore Jr., her sisters, Catherine Myers, Ophelia Scronce, and Susie Smith who all welcomed her with open arms. Mittie’s warmth and wisdom will be deeply missed, but her love will remain a guiding light for her family and friends. They will forever cherish her memory and the lasting impact she has had on their lives.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Cypress Creek Baptist Church, 1289 Old Fayetteville Rd., Garland, NC, by the Reverend Richard Smith officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
