Ms. Hattie "Retha" LaRetha Owens, 92, of 1756 Claudes Drag Road, Roseboro, NC, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2024, at Southwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clinton.
Retha was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Charlie Owens and Elbert Owens, great-nephew Theodore Owens and foster nephew Reginald Blackmon.
Retha was a member of Sam Springs A.M.E. Zion Church where she served as a stewardess, sung in the senior choir, as well as served in other capacities within the church throughout her life when her health allowed. Although she did not have any biological children, she was a loving aunt and friend. Her heart was huge, and she loved everybody to the best of her abilities.
Retha attended and graduated from Roseboro Colored High School in 1952. In 1966 she started working at Garland Shirt Factory also known as Brooks Brothers. Her unbeatable work ethic and unrelenting loyalty carried her through until her retirement.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Sam’s Spring AME Zion Church, 1964 Old Mintz Hwy., Roseboro, NC. Reverend John Mark Melvin will be officiating the service. Interment to follow in the Roseboro-Snow Hill Cemetery, 816 Marion-Amos Rd, Roseboro, NC.
Retha was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Charlie Owens and Elbert Owens, great-nephew Theodore Owens and foster nephew Reginald Blackmon. She is survived by her nephew Irving Ray Owens, of Roseboro, NC, who with a humble heart assumed responsibility of becoming her caretaker for over 10 years until the Lord called her home, her niece Dorothy Faye Owens, of Roseboro, NC, her great-nephew Antonio Owens, of Roseboro, NC, her foster sister Hilda Blackmon of Dunn, NC, her foster nieces, Yashica Blackmon, Anita Blackmon and Yolanda Blackmon of Dunn, NC. Along with her given family, she also had a “chosen” family. She added special friends Brenda Williams of Roseboro, NC, Marie Williamson of Roseboro, NC, Ciji Williamson of Roseboro, NC, Antoinette “Toni” James of Roseboro, NC and Stella Watson of Roseboro, NC. She added two “chosen” special nieces Linda Faison of Faison, NC and Teresa Henry of Ingold, NC and a “chosen” special nephew Jesse Henry of Ingold, NC and a host of other relatives and friends.
A Viewing will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 1:00-2:00 PM at Sam’s Spring AME Zion Church, before the Funeral Service.
