Obituary

Sylvia Madeline DeVane, lovingly known as "Syl," passed away on February 17, 2026, at UNC Chapel Hill Memorial Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and kindness that will forever be cherished by her family and friends. Born on March 25, 1954, in Clinton, North Carolina, Sylvia brought joy to all who knew her during her vibrant life marked by compassion, love, and a deep connection to her loved ones.

For over 30 years, Sylvia worked as a dedicated seamstress, using her talents to create beautiful garments and wearables that adorned many. Her gentle and creative spirit shone through in both her work and her relationships. A shy yet loving individual, Sylvia had a remarkable ability to leave a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. To know her was truly to love her.

Sylvia found immense joy in reading, often losing herself in the pages of books, and cherished the times spent surrounded by her family and grandchildren. Her weekends were brightened by visits to different stores and thrift shops, where she delighted in discovering hidden treasures and unique finds. Wednesdays held a special place in her heart as she looked forward to her weekly trips to Roses, where she could indulge in her love for shopping and enjoy the thrill of each new experience.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Jackie Devane, and their three beloved daughters: Shariah James, alongside her husband Keithan; Diedra James, alongside her husband Brian; and Briana Devane alongside her partner Scooter. She was also the proud mother of Maurice Devane and cherished her daughter-in-law, Kia Devane. Her legacy continues with her treasured grandchildren: Dakota, Kaleb, Tyler, Aysia, Tyneil, Shiyah, Tyson, Sanai, Jordyn, Ayden, Jacobi, Nasiem, Nyaisia, Tatiana and Omari, as well as her great-grandson, Karter Patterson. Sylvia’s family will carry forward her spirit of love and kindness, ensuring that her memory lives on in their hearts.

Her sisters, Deborah Beatty, Faye Simms, and Renda Allensworth, along with her brothers, Michael, Thomas, and Kendall Robinson, and brother Charles Robinson, will always remember her for the loving presence she brought into their lives.

Sylvia is preceded in death by her mother, Madeline Robinson, her father, Charles Robinson, and her sisters Gail Jenkins, Jane Mathews, and Barbara Ann Peterson. The loss of these family members weighed heavily on her throughout her life, but their memories remain intertwined with the vibrancy she brought to this world.

As we remember Sylvia Madeline DeVane, we celebrate a life well-lived – a life that served as a testament to love, family, and kindness. Her gentle spirit will forever resonate in the memories and stories shared by those who loved her deeply. As her family mourns the loss of their beloved matriarch, they find comfort in the knowledge that her legacy will continue through each and every one of them.

A Viewing will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Carter Funeral Home, 111 N. Ingold Ave., Garland, NC, from 1:00-6:00 PM, with the family present from 5:00-6:00 PM.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Royal Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Ivanhoe, NC. The Reverend Harvey C. Robinson will be officiating the service. Interment to follow in the Robinson Cemetery on Wildcat Rd. in Harrells, NC.
