Talmadge Joseph Spell, known affectionately as Joseph, passed away on October 29, 2025, at the age of 54, in New Hanover County, North Carolina. Born on August 13, 1971, in Duplin County, NC, Joseph's life was characterized by his strong will, charisma, and outgoing nature. He was a self-employed painter, known for his dedication to his craft and the joy he found in bringing color and life to the spaces he worked on.

Joseph had an infectious spirit and enjoyed a good time with family and friends, qualities that endeared him to many throughout his life. As a father, his love for his children was evident and unwavering. He is survived by his two children, Michael Spell and his wife Emily of Garland, NC, and Joanna Merritt of Garland, NC. He also leaves behind a step-daughter, Ashley McCullen and her husband Dustin of Harrells, NC, who were cherished members of his family.

In addition to his children, Joseph is survived by his beloved mother, Joyce Johnson of Roseboro, NC, and his brother, Jamie Spell of Denver, CO, beloved companion, Pat Hudson of Surf City, NC. His heart was further filled with love for his eight grandchildren: Natalie Spell, Makayla Spell, Bobby Merritt Jr., Ashlyn Spell, Mattie Merritt, Chelsea Spell, Levi Merritt, and Bailey Merritt, who brought him endless joy.

Joseph was predeceased by his father, William Spell, whose memory will always hold a special place in the hearts of those he left behind.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date, allowing family and friends to gather in remembrance of Joseph’s remarkable life and the impact he made on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be profoundly missed but cherished in the memories of many.
