Willie Clarence Cowan, affectionately known to many as Bill, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, in his beloved hometown of Sampson County, North Carolina. Born on September 12, 1944, in Sampson County, Bill’s life was deeply rooted in the community and landscape that shaped him.
Bill served a short stint in the Army, demonstrating his dedication and commitment to his country early in life. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to the farming industry, where he worked diligently as a supervisor until his retirement. His work ethic and leadership left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him, contributing significantly to the agricultural community in the region.
Bill is survived by his son, Kenny Tyrone Cowan of Virginia, who carries forward his father’s legacy with pride. He also leaves behind cherished siblings: brothers Herman Cowan of Rose Hill, North Carolina, Vernon Cowan of New Haven, Connecticut, and sister Marie Peterson of Lucama, North Carolina. Alongside them, Bill is remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who were touched by his warmth and generosity.
He was preceded in death by his devoted parents, Willie Theodore Cowan and Margaretree Herring Cowan, as well as his sister Victorine Cowan. These family ties were a cornerstone of Bill’s life, and he remained connected to his roots throughout his years.
Bill’s life was a testament to hard work, family devotion, and a deep connection to the land he loved. His passing marks the end of a chapter for those who knew him, but his spirit and influence endure through his family and the Sampson County community. The memories of Bill’s kindness, strength, and guidance will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He will be remembered with respect and admiration, a man who lived his life with integrity and care, leaving behind a strong legacy for future generations.
A Viewing will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 1:00-6:00 PM, with the family present from 5:00-6:00 PM, at Carter Funeral Home, 111 N. Ingold Ave., Garland, NC.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Hayes Chapel Baptist Church, 2580 Hayes Chapel Road, Rose Hill, NC. Archbishop Lorenzo Peterson will be officiating the service. Interment to follow the Funeral Service in the Smith Cemetery, Hayes Chapel Road, Rose Hill, NC.
