Willie Graham Highsmith, a dedicated welder in the steel industry and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, at his residence at 89 N. Grant Ave, Garland, North Carolina. Born on April 20, 1948, in Bladen County, NC, Willie lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a quiet strength that touched all who knew him. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his loved ones, offering comfort and peace in his final moments.
Willie’s career as a welder in the steel industry was a testament to his skill, diligence, and steadfast commitment. Throughout his professional life, he contributed substantially to his field, earning respect from colleagues and friends alike for his expertise and work ethic. Beyond his occupation, Willie was a pillar of support and kindness within his family and community.
Willie is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Eliza Highsmith, who stood by his side through life’s journey at their home. Together, they shared a bond that was a foundation for the family they nurtured and cherished. Willie leaves behind two sons: Jackie Highsmith and his wife, Barbara of New Haven, Connecticut, and Larry Highsmith of Wilmington, North Carolina. He is also survived by four daughters: Clarene Highsmith of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Elizabeth M. Highsmith-West and Angela Highsmith and fiance Michael, both of Clinton, North Carolina; and Patricia Highsmith of New Haven, Connecticut.
Willie’s legacy extends further to his six brothers: Floyd Highsmith and his wife, Elaine of Harrells, North Carolina; Glen Highsmith and Harold Highsmith, both of Harrells; Samuel Highsmith of Teaneck, New Jersey; Archie Highsmith of Durham, North Carolina; and Jeffery Highsmith of Garland, North Carolina. Additionally, he is remembered by his six sisters: Adie Herring and Anese Gibbs of Garland, North Carolina; Jaunita Newkirk and her husband, Luther of Harrells; Jean Highsmith, and Vivian Highsmith, of Harrells, North Carolina, and Brenda Highsmith of Clinton, North Carolina.
Willie is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Arlene Highsmith, as well as his son Robert Highsmith, whose memories remain deeply cherished.
Willie’s enduring legacy is reflected in a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a wide circle of family members who were blessed to experience his warmth and guidance. His presence will be profoundly missed, yet fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
Willie Graham Highsmith’s life was a remarkable story of dedication, love, and perseverance. His memory lives on through his family, whose lives he enriched immeasurably, and through the strong character and values he passed down to generations. Those who knew him will forever hold in their hearts the quiet strength and unwavering spirit that defined his journey.

A Viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, from 1:00-6:00 PM, with the family present from 5:00-6:00 PM, at Carter Funeral Home, 111 N. Ingold Ave., Garland, NC.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Carter Funeral Home, 111 N. Ingold Ave., Garland, NC. Interment to follow in the Garland Community Cemetery, 203 Hill Circle Road, Garland, NC. Deacon Leander Owens will be officiating the service.
